Dar es Salaam. Mwananchi Communications Limited Managing Director, Mr Bakari Machumu has revealed that ‘The Citizen Rising Woman’ has become way of life for Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) to increase innovation in facilitating the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5) which focuses on Gender Equality, using content as a bridge that connects Tanzanian women and inspires success.
“Readers have been eager to understand in depth what enables women to succeed in their professions and how they can learn from these exemplary models,” he said.
He continued: “We have been writing news aimed at highlighting the significant contribution of Tanzanian women in leadership and in bringing about change while recognising institutions with effective strategies and policies for uplifting women.
He noted that the truth is, since The Citizen started writing these stories, there have been a lot of contributions from readers and various stakeholders.
He said that as of today, March 8, 2024, the Citizen has been able to write 217 stories about women and how institutions are empowering women in leadership positions.
“We have also awarded 35 awards to institutions with systems that empower women and those that have many women in decision-making leadership positions,” he said, adding that today, MCL will present awards to the 10 winners of the year.
“All these articles are available on the website thecitizen.co.tz, and some are available on the website Risingwoman.org (RWO),” he said.
Furthermore, Mr Machumu said that this Rising Woman conference has now become a tradition and is an essential part of the celebration of International Women's Day.
Every March 8, 2024, MCL brings together women and various stakeholders in discussions aimed at analysing the opportunities available to women in leadership and examining the positive results demonstrated by institutions that prioritise women.
“All this is done with the aim of continuing to improve gender balance and equality in leadership to ensure that decisions reflect the voices and perspectives of women, who make up nearly 51 percent of all Tanzanians," Bakari shares.
"Success in life, business, or institutions is not possible if half of Tanzanians lack representation at the highest decision-making levels,” he said.
