Dar es Salaam. Mainland champions, Young Africans (Yanga), have opted to remain at their traditional base, Avic Town in Dar es Salaam, cancelling earlier plans to travel to Egypt for preseason preparations ahead of the new league season.
Initially, Yanga had been training at the KMC Complex and were expected to travel to Alexandria, Egypt, following a proposal from their head coach, Romain Folz.
The French tactician, who recently guided the team to victory in the Rayon Sport Special Competition, was impressed with the renovated Avic Town grounds and its upgraded facilities. Convinced of their readiness, he eventually reversed his decision.
Sources within the club revealed that beyond Folz’s change of mind, Yanga’s leadership also saw limited value in traveling abroad, especially after their arch-rivals Simba SC had already set up camp in Cairo and Ismailia.
According to insiders, officials reminded the technical bench that Avic Town has been more than just a training facility—it has become a fortress and source of confidence for the team.
The statistics speak for themselves. Since making Avic Town their regular base, Yanga have enjoyed remarkable consistency.
In their encounters with Simba during this period, the champions have registered five straight victories, settled for three draws, and lost only two matches.
Such a record, officials believe, underscores the importance of maintaining familiarity and momentum as the new season kicks off.
Meanwhile, the Jangwani giants have bolstered their squad with the acquisition of Ghanaian defender Frank Assinki, who has signed a one-year contract. Assinki, who featured for Singida Black Stars last season, is expected to add depth and competition in Yanga’s defensive line. The 22-year-old defender will now compete with Dickson Job, Ibrahim “Baca” Hamad, and Bakari Mwamyeto for a place in the heart of the defense.
His arrival is seen as part of Yanga’s broader strategy to strengthen the squad and maintain dominance both in the domestic league and continental competitions. Club insiders suggest that Assinki’s versatility and physical presence make him a valuable addition to Romain Folz’s plans, particularly as Yanga prepare for another demanding campaign.
The Ghanaian’s experience in the Tanzanian Premier League with Singida is expected to ease his integration into the squad. As the season draws closer, Yanga’s decision to remain at Avic Town reflects both confidence in their home-based facilities and a pragmatic approach to preparation.
With continuity, new signings, and the psychological edge of their “fortress,” the champions are positioning themselves for another strong season at home and abroad.
