Tanzania’s football heavyweights clashed on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in a Community Shield tie marking the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season
Songwe. Police in Songwe Region are searching for a resident of Ululu hamlet in Idiwili village, Mbozi District, Evacery Jamsoni Mwaweza, for allegedly killing his neighbour, Zabroni Mwambogolo (28), during a Simba–Yanga football match.
Tanzania’s football heavyweights clashed on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in a Community Shield tie marking the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
The Jangwani Street giants, Young Africans (Yanga), lifted the shield after edging out their arch-rivals, for the sixth successive time, courtesy of a 54th-minute strike from Ivorian midfielder Pacome Zouzoua.
However, Songwe Regional Police Commander (RPC), Augustino Senga, said on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, that the duo was involved in an argument over the football game at around 6:50 pm.
He said the deceased was stabbed in the chest near the heart and died while being rushed to the Iyula dispensary for treatment.
“Investigations show the incident stemmed from a football rivalry between the deceased and the suspect, who used a knife he was carrying. After the attack, he fled and remains at large,” said Commander Senga.
He added that police are conducting an intensive manhunt to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice.
“The Songwe Regional Police urge citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to refrain from violent acts that may have serious consequences, including loss of life, especially in sports-related disputes,” emphasised Commander Senga.
In a separate incident, the regional police chief said three people died in a road accident involving a tricycle (Bajaj motorcycle) and a lorry on the Tunduma–Sumbawanga highway in Chipaka ward, Tunduma division, Momba District.
He said the lorry driven by an unidentified driver collided with a tricycle driven by a resident of Mwaka, Tunduma, Silasi Malongo (23).
The accident occurred on Monday, September 15, 2025, at around 9:00 a.m. The three fatalities include a student, Mr Ibrahim Kibadeni (16), a Bajaj driver, Mr Silasi Malongo (23), and an unidentified woman, estimated to be 30–40 years old, who died while receiving treatment at Tunduma Health Centre.
Two others were injured, including Venace Jail (34) and Loyce Kandonga (15), both residents of Tunduma.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by negligence on the part of the lorry driver, who failed to observe road safety laws and regulations and disregarded other road users,” said Commander Senga.
