Dar/Upcountry. While Tanzanians joined Christians worldwide in celebrating Christmas on December 25 and 26, two tragic incidents occurred in different regions.

In Mvomero District, Morogoro Region, a herder was fatally stabbed on Christmas Day, while a police officer from Kibaya Police Station in Kiteto District, Manyara Region, died in a road accident on Christmas Eve.

Reports gathered by The Citizen on Thursday, December 26, 2024, confirmed that the stabbing took place in Lubungo Village, Mvomero District, involving 20-year-old herder Elisha Lengai.

Morogoro Regional Police Commander Alex Mkama confirmed the incident, stating that 22-year-old Sikonye Kipondo fatally stabbed Lengai following a dispute.

The regional police chief explained that the stabbing occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Christmas morning, although the cause of the quarrel remains unclear.

“The deceased, the suspect, and other young men were sitting together when a disagreement broke out between the two,” RPC Mkama explained.

“As is common among herders, they carried knives and other weapons,” he added.

According to Mkama, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Lengai in the thigh near the bladder, leading to his death.

The suspect fled the scene, and authorities are actively searching for him, the regional police boss says the motive behind the quarrel is being investigated.

Meanwhile, in Manyara Region, reports indicate that George Mwakambonjo, a 50-year-old police officer from Kibaya Police Station in Kiteto District, died on December 24 after being struck by a truck.

Manyara Regional Police Commander Ahmed Makarani confirmed the incident, stating that the accident occurred on Christmas Eve when Mwakambonjo boarded a motorcycle (bodaboda).

“The truck driver, following the motorcycle, drove negligently, striking the motorcycle and causing the officer’s death. Both the truck and motorcycle drivers fled the scene after the accident,” said RPC Makarani.

Despite these two incidents, peace and harmony prevailed in many parts of the country.

Law enforcement agencies promised to increase security measures in their jurisdictions to ensure public safety as the holiday season continues.

In Morogoro, the Fire and Rescue Brigade has heightened its presence around children's playgrounds and recreational areas to enhance safety during the festive season.

Morogoro Fire and Rescue Commander Shabani Marugujo confirmed that inspections began on December 24 and will continue throughout the holiday season to ensure the safety of families and children.

“We urge the public to call 114 for rescue services in case of emergencies,” Mr Marugujo advised.

Mara Regional Police Commander Pius Lutumo reported that Christmas celebrations in Bunda, Musoma, Serengeti, and Butiama districts were peaceful and free of criminal activity. He expressed his gratitude to the residents for their cooperation.

“Security efforts continue as we prepare for the New Year, but we are pleased that the celebrations in our region were peaceful,” said RPC Lutumo.

In Mbeya City, Regional Police Commander Benjamin Kuzaga confirmed that Christmas celebrations occurred without incident.

“We've had no reports of disturbances, and our patrols have helped maintain peace,” stated RPC Kuzaga on December 26, adding that security efforts would continue until the holiday season concludes.

Meanwhile, in Dar es Salaam, Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro urged citizens to follow safety guidelines.

He also reported a fire incident at Coco Beach, which was swiftly contained by the Fire and Rescue Brigade.

"Aside from the fire, the Christmas celebrations were largely peaceful. We urge people to be vigilant—especially regarding home security. If leaving home, make sure someone stays behind to monitor the premises,” he advised.

Mr Muliro also emphasised that children should not be left to roam alone, particularly near water, and advised against swimming for those who are inexperienced.

“We want everyone to enjoy a safe and peaceful holiday season,” he added.
