Nine die as bus, minivan collide in Kilimanjaro Region

Rombo. Nine people were killed in a head-on collision between a minivan and a passenger bus in Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region, on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

Rombo District Commissioner Raymond Mwangwala confirmed the incident, stating that the bodies were taken to Karume Hospital for preservation.

One survivor, injured in the crash, was transported to Huruma Hospital for further treatment.

Mwangwala explained that the accident occurred when the minivan, traveling from Tarakea, overtook a truck and collided with a bus from Ngasere Company, which was en route from Dodoma to Rombo.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa reported that six of the victims have been identified, while three others remain unknown.

The identified victims include a resident of Kamwanga Mamasita Lowasa (27), a resident of Elasti in Kenya Damarisi Kanini Mwikau (22), and a Kenyan counterpart Monica Mumbua (64).

Others according to the regional police boss are Hilda Leberatus (24), Peter Urio (38), and a resident of Tarakea Eligatanasi Kanje (30).

The police chief attributed the accident to reckless driving by the minivan driver, who attempted an overtaking maneuver without caution.
