Tanzanian human rights defender and independent media editor Maria Sarungi has been released and is safe after being abducted earlier today, 12 January 2025, in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

The news was confirmed by Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, who posted on her X account (formerly Twitter):

"Maria Sarungi has been released and is safe for now. The unfortunate ordeal she has endured paints a worrying picture of the state of our country's human rights context. We will pursue answers from all relevant authorities on why this happened. We thank everyone for the concern and support in ensuring her release."

Maria’s abduction sparked widespread outrage and solidarity across the region.

Calls for justice and transparency are mounting as activists and allies demand an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
