Dar es Salaam. The Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo, has called upon the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) to enhance its efficiency in decision-making processes to better support the private sector.

Speaking during a recent meeting with TBS management at their headquarters, Dr Jafo said TBS should not be a hindrance to businesses seeking quality certifications, but rather a facilitator in ensuring smoother operations for entrepreneurs.

He said transparency was crucial and stressed the need to prevent any perception of injustice in TBS operations.

“There are many small traders doing business, but the biggest challenge is that they do not have a quality logo to facilitate them so that more of their products can be sold in local supermarkets. By doing this, you will help reduce the challenge of unemployment on the streets,” he said.

Addressing the issue of permit processes, Dr Jafo urged TBS to expedite approvals, especially for nutritious food products, to foster their availability on a larger scale. Expressing satisfaction with TBS's current performance, he encouraged the organization to strive for further improvement.

In response, TBS Director General Dr Ashura Katunzi outlined ongoing efforts, including the construction of modern mills in Dodoma and Mwanza regions. These initiatives are part of TBS's strategy to decentralize operations and bring services closer to the populace.

Dr Jafo also emphasized the importance of mutual respect among TBS employees, regardless of their positions, to enhance overall work performance and foster collaborative relationships with other ministries and institutions.

The minister's directive underscores a proactive approach aimed at bolstering Tanzania's business environment and promoting economic growth through streamlined regulatory processes.
