Moshi Airport to receive Sh1bn facelift
Moshi. The government has set aside Sh1 billion for renovation of the Moshi Airport in the tourist hotspot northern zone, a cabinet minister has said.
The minister for Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Issack Kamwelwe, said here at the weekend that the airport, which currently serves mainly charter flights, was tarmacked seven years before Tanganyika (later Tanzania) attained its independence.
According to him, there was a need to undertake a serious renovation so that it can continue playing an active role in the development of the country’s tourism.
“The airport is not in a good state…It is not fenced and this is dangerous for people who walk near it especially when aircraft take off or land.
It was tarmacked in 1954 and this calls for another serious refurbishment,” he said.
The Moshi Airport is strategically located to help tourists who come to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the Africa’s highest peak.
Mr Kamwelwe directed the Tanzania Airports Authority (Taa) to cooperate with the Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads) to conduct a thorough analysis that will come up with the right amount that would be required to refurbish the airport.
He gave Taa only one month to establish actual requirements for a complete refurbishment of the Moshi Airport.
