Dar es Salaam. As the nation mourns the passing of the Kigamboni Member of Parliament Faustine Ndugulile, Vice President Philip Mpango and former President Jakaya Kikwete have paid tribute to him, sharing heartfelt reflections on their personal and professional relationships with the late politician.
Speaking in Kigamboni, Dr Mpango who then served as finance Minister, recalled working closely with Dr Ndugulile who was deputy health Minister, describing the moment as challenging times.
“He was a great support during some of the most difficult periods, including being questioned by parliamentary committees. He stood firm in defending the government’s arguments,” Dr Mpango said.
The Vice President also remembered meeting Ndugulile in Arusha during the African Ministers of Health meeting as part of Tanzania’s efforts to secure the World Health Organization (WHO) regional director position.
Ndugulile was the WHO regional director-elect who was expected to assume office next year.
“Dr Ndugulile was a friend to everyone unless provoked. He was a good-hearted person. If we could ask God, we would have asked for more time with him. We are grateful for his life and should emulate the good deeds he left behind,” said Dr Mpango.
Reflecting November 27 which is the day of his passing, Dr Mpango said it was a difficult moment for him personally. He discovered two missed calls after returning from church, later learning of Ndugulile’s death, as well as that of a former classmate on the same day.
He called for unity and mutual support during both joyous and sorrowful times, thanking mourners who have stood by Ndugulile’s family during their bereavement.
Former President Jakaya Kikwete shared his memories of collaborating with Dr Ndugulile during preparations for the WHO Africa region director campaign.
“He often consulted me on countries with unclear voting stances. For example, in Sierra Leone, I contacted their health Minister directly, who confirmed their support. This happened with several other nations,” said Mr Kikwete.
He also recalled a campaign meeting in Ghana where African health ministers gathered. “Despite not being as prominent now, I campaigned for him, and they still remembered me. After his victory, he called to thank me,” he added.
Mr Kikwete expressed gratitude for Ndugulile’s impactful life but lamented his untimely passing at the age of 55.
“He achieved so much, yet it is never easy to lose someone while they are still young,” he said.
