Mzize and Dube shine as Yanga crush KenGold to reclaim the league lead

What you need to know:

  • Clement Mzize scored twice, Prince Dube added two more, while Pacome Zouzoua and Duke Abuya each found the back of the net.

Dar es Salaam. Defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) regained the top position in the Mainland Tanzania Premier League after a dominant 6-1 victory over KenGold FC at the KMC Complex on February 5, 2025.

Clement Mzize scored twice, Prince Dube added two more, while Pacome Zouzoua and Duke Abuya each found the back of the net.

The commanding performance saw Yanga leapfrog Simba at the top of the standings with 45 points from 17 matches.

KenGold FC’s lone goal came in the 86th minute when Seleman Rashid scored a stunning long-range strike from 45 meters, catching Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra off guard.

His goal, which came immediately after Yanga’s sixth, was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing evening for his team.

Dube opened the scoring early in the second minute, following a well-timed pass from Stephane Aziz Ki.

Just minutes later, in the sixth minute, Mzize doubled Yanga’s lead, capitalizing on an opportunity inside the penalty box.

Zouzoua then added a third in the 35th minute, finishing a brilliant assist from Dube.

Mzize bagged his second goal in the 44th minute, with Dube scoring his brace just two minutes into the second half, making it 5-0.

The sixth and final goal came from Abuya in the 85th minute, after a well-placed pass from Kennedy Musonda.

KenGold FC, however, struggled to contain their opponents and are still in danger of relegation, remaining at the bottom of the table with just six points from 17 matches.

Despite their poor form, KenGold can still accumulate a maximum of 45 points if they win all their remaining 13 matches, but they will need a drastic improvement to avoid the drop.

Mzize’s brace brought his total to nine goals, propelling him to the top of the league’s scoring charts. He has now surpassed Elvis Lupia of Singida Black Stars, who has eight goals.

Meanwhile, Dube and Zouzoua each have seven goals, joining Simba’s Jean Ahoua and Leonel Ateba in a tie for third place in the scoring race.

Yanga’s commanding win has placed them firmly at the summit of the league, while KenGold FC will need to find their form quickly if they are to avoid relegation.

The race for the top remains fierce, with several teams vying for supremacy in the remainder of the season.
