Dodoma. The Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) will start offering a course on basic off-shore safety this year, the Parliament heard yesterday.

Deputy minister for Works, Transportation and Communication Edwin Ngonyani said the course will add to graduates’ competence to work in the growing natural gas sub sector.

He made the remarks while responding to a question from Abdallah Mtolea (Temeke–CUF) who wanted to know when DMI will start offering courses that would enable many Tanzanians secure employment in the gas sector.

Mr Ngonyani told the Parliament that Bandari College together with oil and gas stakeholders including DMI and Norway were putting the course together plus the necessary infrasturcture.

Equipment includes helicopters swimming pools and more.

“It is our belief that this course will increase employment opportunities among Tanzanians in the growing oil and gas sector,” he said.

He noted that the course offered by DMI and Bandari College would only supplement the government’s efforts to train Tanzanians.

He said Dodoma University and Mining College have, for long time, offered courses in oil and gas and many Tanzanians have already graduated.
