Mwanza. Police in the region yesterday shot an alleged bandit dead while a second man escaped during a special operation to curb crime in the area.

The shoot-out occurred around 12:20am in the night along Utemini Street, Mkolani. Mwanza regional police commander Ahmed Msangi told the Citizen that the police officer was shot in the foot.

The RPC said since he took over the office in May this year the police have killed four armed robbers   and more have been arrested.

Mr Msangi said the bandit shot at and injured the officer with a pistol before he in turn was shot dead.

“We found the pistol on his person while his accomplice fled into the rocky hills,” said the RPC.

He says the robbers have been on the run for some time for allegedly committing crimes including thefts and fraud in connection to mobile money transfers. He called upon residents to give helpful information.

”The duo had been on the run for a longtime and a tip off made it possible for the raid to take place.” He said.
