President Samia to launch Tanzania’s electric-powered train services on Thursday

What you need to know:

  • The launch is scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 2024, following the electric train's maiden trip between the two cities on July 25, 2024.

Dar es Salaam.  President Samia Suluhu Hassan will officially launch Tanzania’s new electric-powered train services through the Standards Gauge Railway (SGR) line between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.

The launch is scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 2024, following the electric train's maiden trip between the two cities on July 25, 2024.

President Hassan announced the launch date with enthusiasm. "I am happy and proud to inform the public that on August 1st this year, I will officially launch train trips between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma,” she said.

Samia was speaking while chairing a Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC) meeting in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

The TNBC, which President Hassan chairs, provides a platform for dialogue between private sector representatives and senior government officials, including the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, ministers, and Permanent Secretaries.

The council addresses issues impacting the business environment and explores solutions for improvement.

During the meeting, President Hassan urged private sector investment in the operation of Tanzania’s electric-powered SGR trains.

She highlighted that her administration, guided by the 4Rs philosophy—Reconciliation, Resilience, Reform, and Rebuild—has implemented reforms to open the railway sector to private participation.

"Under the 4Rs framework, we have introduced reforms that dismantle the railway operating monopoly.

We have revised regulations to encourage private sector involvement," President Hassan explained.

With these new regulations in place, she assured that there are no obstacles to private sector engagement in SGR operations.
