Over 1,000 Pupils at Buswelu Primary school in Ilemela are at risk of contracting cholera following poor sanitation at the institution’s ablution block.
The school’s acting head teacher Ms Maryloyce Jonathan said toilets at the school are connected to a water flushing system but water has gone out at the school’s taps.
She said, the water regulatory authority has disconnected water from the school following accumulated water bills.
She said currently pupils have to fetch water in buckets from the neighboring Kaselya primary school, a process which she described as cumbersome and not effective.
“Lack of water has posed a threat to our health especially during this time of cholera other water related diseases,” she said
Following received complaints from pupils at the School, The Citizen made a spot check and revealed that water was in dire need for the better side of the institution.
Speaking to the citizen, the District Executive Director John Wanga who doubles as a member of the board of Committee at the Mwanza Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Mwauwasa) said he was not aware of the filthy condition at the school.
