Serengeti named Africa's leading national park fifth time in a row

Dar es Salaam. Serengeti National Park has been named the leading national park in Africa, beating six other national parks from the continent in the 2023 World Travel Awards (WTA).

Famed for the wildebeest migration and a vast plain that accommodates millions of wildlife, including the Big 5, Serengeti was named Africa’s Leading National Park for the fifth time in a row, in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and now 2023.

Serengeti won against Central Kalahari Game Reserve (Botswana), Etosha National Park (Namibia), Kidepo Valley National Park (Uganda), Kruger National Park (South Africa), and Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya).

On Sunday, October 15, the World Travel Awards, a global initiative that recognises and rewards excellence in travel and tourism, unveiled its Africa 2023 winners at the event held in Dubai.

Tanzania National Park (Tanapa) expressed their gratitude on their Instagram account to all those who participated in voting and enabled Serengeti to rise to the top again this year.

The World Travel Awards also recognised Ngorongoro Conservation Area as Africa’s leading tourist attraction.

Tanzania won eight different categories, which included Leading National Park, Leading Tourist Attraction, Leading Tourist Board, Leading Tour Operator, Leading Luxury Island, Leading Luxury Tented Safari Camp, and Leading New Resort and Responsible Tourism Award.

The Founder of the WTA, Mr Graham Cooke, said: “It has been a privilege to welcome our winners from across Africa and the Indian Ocean for our 30th anniversary celebrations in Dubai. The incredible evening will live long in everyone’s memory. Our winners represent stellar examples of tourism excellence, and I congratulate each and every one for helping to raise the collective benchmark to even greater heights”.

In other development, South Africa’s Cape Town was declared Africa's Leading City Destination.

In the aviation sector, Ethiopian Airlines lifted the titles of ‘Africa's Leading Airline’ and ‘Africa's Leading Airline—Business Class, and Kenya Airways was voted ‘Africa's Leading Airline—Economy Class'.
