Severe water shortage hits Handeni

Handeni. Residents of Mlimani Ward in Handeni District, Tanga Region are facing  severe water shortage following the collapse of a borehole they counted on.

Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, they said the warped  borehole was the major source of the precious liquid for them.

This has forced Mlimani residents to drill two water wells which, they said, is  not enough. 

They have asked the government to drill reliable boreholes for them, saying they are compelled to spend sleepless nights searching for water..

Elika Francis, a resident of Antakae Street, Mlimani Ward, said women and girls in of the affected area were putting their lives at risk as they wake up  at 03:00am.

She water scarcity was one of the major challenges they are now facing and pleaded to relevant authorities to drill boreholes for them.

“Yesterday, for instance, I went  to a water well at around 03:30am and stayed in a queue for a long time,” she said.

“I managed to fetch five buckets of water. I f you go there at 06:00am you can’t get it,” she added.

When contacted for comment, Mlimani Ward councilor Mwajabu Suphian admitted that her ward was among  areas in the district facing water scarcity after the place where they used to fetch the precious liquid collapsed. 

She said currently residents of her ward spend many hours searching for water.

“Clean drinking water is scarce here and people, mainly women and girls, spend their entire day searching for it,” she said. Water pollution has been documented as a contributor to a wide range of health problems and disorders in humans.

It has also been shown to have drastically negative impacts on wild animals and the environment as a whole. There are quite a few different effects of water pollution that are of significant importance to humans.. 

Water pollution can pose health dangers to humans who come into contact with it.
