Sugar firm donates to flood survivors in Kilombero

Dar es Salaam. Kilombero Sugar Company Limited has donated food worth Sh15 million to residents of Kilombero District which has been severely affected by the recent flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The assistance handed on Wednesday April 17, 2924 includes six tonnes of essential food items like beans, maize flour and rice.

The donation is set to assist over 500 households devastated by the floods, according to the company.

Speaking after receiving the assistance, Kilombero District Commissioner, Mr Dunstan Kyobya, thanked the company for the support.

"Our community has been hard-hit by the ongoing rains,” he said, adding that the government and the private sector need to continue joining hands in addressing critical issues.

He said that the number of affected households reached 1,500.

Kilombero Sugar Company reaffirmed its commitment to the community, promising to continue allocating resources to its Disaster Relief Programme which is intended to mitigate the effects of unforeseen disasters.

The company’s communications and stakeholder relations manager, Mr Victor Byemelwa, said that the aid is part of the programme.

"We are committed to the welfare of our community. Today's donation reflects our values of responsiveness and integrity. By supporting more than 500 families, we are addressing the immediate needs of those experiencing hardship," he said.

Mr Byemelwa urged other stakeholders to support the government's efforts to aid communities affected by the recent floods, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon.

One of the local residents affected by floods, Mr Hassan Abdalah, shared his harrowing experience at the event.

"The flood destroyed everything, leaving my family and I without shelter. The assistance we received from the government and organisations is invaluable in alleviating our suffering during this difficult time," he said.
