Tanzania: ADC re-elect national chairman

Unguja. Members of the Alliance for Democratic Change (ADC) have reelected Hamad Rashid Mohamed as the national chairman during the party’s general assembly, which took place in Unguja on Sunday.

Mr Mohamed garnered 130 votes from 138 members who attended the meeting, which is equivalent to 96.6 per cent. Thirty members, however, did not attend the meeting due to various reasons.

Vice chairman for both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar and members of the governing council were elected, but results will be released today, April 15.

Mr Mohamed, who doubles as Health Minister in the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar was the lone contestant for the post of chairman.

Speaking before the start of voting, Mr Mohamed said ADC will continue to support the government in maintaining peace and security in order to encourage economic activities.

“Peace and security are important if we are to make a stride economically,” he said.

Mr Mohamed commended the government for providing free education, a move which has increased the number of children in schools.

“ADC leaders should start thinking about diversifying the party’s sources of income in order to enable it to realise its ultimate goal of improving economic status of the people,” he said.

For his part, party’s secretary general Doyo Hassan Doyo said the members discussed amendment of the party’s constitution to align it with the Political Parties Act.
