Tanzania applauds UN framework for bringing great reforms in just one year
Tanzania is making progress in key areas such as nutrition, water services, leadership, political training for women, and access to capital, thanks to a framework signed with the United Nations in 2022.
Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Angella Kairuki, underscored the importance of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework during the UN International Day, which took place on October 24. The theme of the day was 'Investing in Tomorrow Today: Leveraging Tanzania's Young Population.'
Kairuki said the Framework highlights Tanzania's dedication to sustainable and inclusive development, serving as a roadmap for the UN's support for the nation's development plans in the context of the SDGs.
UN Resident Coordinator Zlatan Millsic said Tanzania is lagging in the implementation of key sustainable development goals, including poverty reduction, and hence needs to pull up its socks.
He said Tanzania may not reach the target for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 on poverty by 2030, even as it is progressing well on targets 3,4,5,6,7,8 and 16.
The targets on track include food security, health, education, water, energy, and peace and security.
"The UN builds the SDG targets around national goals, and Tanzania has gaps around the 17 goals," he said.
According to him, it was imperative to accelerate efforts to reach the targets, especially on poverty, to improve the lives of the people.
He noted that factors like Covid-19, the Ukraine-Russia war, and the Middle East have adversely affected countries, but Tanzania, through its different policies, saw its GDP drop from 7 to 2 percent and later recovered to more than 5 percent, while other countries dropped to negative.
Meanwhile, while speaking about the UN International Day, he said that in 2007, Tanzania became one of eight countries worldwide to pilot the UN Delivering as One reform.
"These reforms were designed to enhance the UN's efficiency, coherence, and effectiveness in its operations at the country level. These reforms are now implemented globally in over 160 countries," he said.
According to him, Tanzania's commitment to the UN is also reflected in its active role in shaping the global development agenda and playing a pivotal role in crafting the SDGs.
He said the launch of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework in 2022 highlights Tanzania's dedication to sustainable and inclusive development, serving as a roadmap for the UN's support for the nation's development plans in the context of the SDGs.
The UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework is a valuable tool for Tanzania as it pursues its development goals. The Framework has already led to progress in key areas such as nutrition, water services, leadership, political training for women, and access to capital.
It is important to continue implementing the Framework and to address the gaps in the SDGs, especially poverty reduction, in order to improve the lives of all Tanzanians.
