Tanzania police reshuffle traffic unit

Dodoma. Tanzania police announced a reshuffle within the leadership of the traffic unit, as reports indicate a slight decrease of the number of road accidents.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Camillus Wambura, announced the changes on Sunday December 22, 2024, affecting several senior officers across the country.

Mr Wambura described the changes as “minor adjustments” aimed at strengthening the unit’s operations and improving service delivery.

One of the notable transfers is that of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ramadhani Ng’anzi, who has been reassigned from his role as Commander of the Tanzania Traffic Police Unit to the Criminal Investigation Headquarters in Dodoma.

Mr Ng’anzi will now serve as the head of the Social Ethics and Offences Department.

Taking over his role is Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) William Mkonda, who previously headed the Traffic Police for the Special Zone of Dar es Salaam.

The head of traffic police in Dodoma, Mr Boniphace Mbao, has been transferred to the Special Zone of Dar es Salaam, where he will head the unit.

In another move, ACP Michael Deleli, who was responsible for public education within the Traffic Police Unit, has been reassigned to Police Headquarters in Dodoma. He will now serve as the Acting Head of National Celebrations, the police said in a statement signed by its spokesperson David Misime.

The reshuffle also saw ACP Nassoro Sisiwa, who was the head of operations for the Traffic Police Unit, transferred to Kilimanjaro Region. He will take up the role of Head of Traffic Police for the region.

The changes come at the time the police statistics indicate that the number of accidents and related deaths had slightly decreased.

According to a police report on the state of crimes and safety, a total of 479 accidents were recorded between July and September 2024, compared to 512 accidents during the same period in 2023.

The police reported that 453 people died in the road accidents between July and September 2024, a decrease from 477 fatalities in the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, 835 people were injured, up from 782 recorded during the previous year.
