Dar es Salaam. The Vice Chairman of Chadema for Tanzania Mainland, Mr Tundu Lissu was arrested this morning at his home in Tegeta, Dar es Salaam, just hours before the opposition party’s planned protests were set to begin.

Chadema’s lawyer, Hekima Mwasipu, confirmed Lissu's arrest and stated that he was taken to Mbweni Police Station. "I am on my way to the station to understand the reasons for his arrest," Mwasipu told Mwananchi, a sister paper of The Citizen.

The arrest comes as Chadema prepares for peaceful protests, which were scheduled for today in Dar es Salaam. The demonstrations were intended to address issues of recent kidnappings and disappearances across the country.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Police Force regarding the arrest are still ongoing.
