Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has warned that the cyclone Ialy is strengthening from a moderate to severe tropical storm as it remains in the Indian Ocean.
The presence of the moderate Ialy in the Indian Ocean, north of Madagascar Island, was announced on Friday but the updated information released on Sunday evening indicated that it was about 680 kilometres from the east coast of Tanzania.
“The analysis of weather systems show that the moderate tropical storm has strengthened to severe tropical storm and has continued to remain in the Indian Ocean as previously forecasted,” TMA said in a statement.
“Following its position and the distance from our country, periods of strong winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour and waves exceeding two meters may occur in the Indian Ocean, especially between Monday May 20 and Tuesday May 21, 2024,” the agency stated, adding that rain periods are also likely to be observed over the coastal areas between Tuesday and Wednesday.
TMA also advised mariners and the public in general, to take appropriate precautions and continue to monitor and consider forecast information as well as follow guidance from experts in the relevant sectors.
This is the second cyclone in the East African coast happening in May 2024.
Tropical Cyclone Hidaya had triggered heavy rains and winds as it rolled towards Tanzania and neighbouring Kenya, countries already battered by torrential downpours and floods that have left more than 400 people dead across East Africa in recent weeks.
The cyclone lost its strength on May 4, 2024 after making landfall and there were no casualties reported.
