Tanzanian university confirms Mirerani mine accident victims were its students

What you need to know:

  • The two students had, reportedly, gone for practical training and initial reports indicate that the cause of death was suffocation

Mbeya. Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) has confirmed that two of its students have died of suffocation at a mineshaft in the Mirerani mining site where they had gone for practical training.

Speaking to Mwananchi Digital on Friday, July 26, 2024, MUST’s Communications and Marketing Officer, Dickson Msakazi, identified the students as Given Machunde, an undergraduate student in Mining Engineering, and Ismail Omary, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student.

Msakazi stated that initial reports suggest that the cause of their deaths was suffocation when they were in the pits where they were continuing with their practical training.

"We are waiting for further details from the mine owner. We will be able to divulge further information after investigations," he said.

Speaking to The Citizen, Manyara Regional Police Commander (RPC), SACP George Katabazi, confirmed the incident. "So far, we have recorded two fatalities, but we will provide more details later," he said.
