Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) has come out to clarify after a social media post with contradicting expiry date labels of Menthodex Cough Mixture syrup, went viral.
In a public notice issued on Friday, February 22, 2019, the TFDA acting director general said the syrup was registered in the country but the batch number whose label has raised questions on social media, has not yet entered the Tanzanian market.
TFDA said the syrup is batch number 332W1 and that the manufacturers erred by indicating on its packaging container that it was manufactured on April 2019, yet according to the calendar, we are still in February.
The authority says since 100 milliliters and 200 milliliters of the product had been registered for the Tanzanian market, it has communicated with the London-based manufacturers-Bells and Sons Company (Druggists) Limited for clarification.
“The company has confirmed that it erred when printing the manufacturing date on the packaging material of the new release of the syrup,” reads part of the notice.
He said the accurate manufacturing date was supposed to be April 2018, noting that the company confirmed that the batch was produced and dispatched for the Nigeria market alone.
“TFDA private inspection has established that there is no presence of the erred batch in the Tanzania market. The previous batches that are present in the country’s market, don’t have the contradictions. They are safe for human consumption,” reads another part of the TFDA notice.
