  • Speaking with editors on January 13, 2025, Minister Bashungwa revealed that since issuing the directive, 400,000 of the previously uncollected cards had been distributed to the public.

Dar es Salaam. The National Identification Authority (NIDA) has announced the suspension of National Identification Number (NIN) usage for individuals who have failed to collect their national identity cards.

This announcement comes with only 15 days remaining until the deadline set by the Minister for Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, for distributing 1.2 million identity cards produced by the authority, which are still uncollected by their rightful owners.

Speaking with editors on January 13, 2025, Minister Bashungwa revealed that since issuing the directive, 400,000 of the previously uncollected cards had been distributed to the public.

According to a letter issued by NIDA on Friday, January 17, 2025, and signed by the authority’s Director-General, James Kaji, those who have not collected their cards and will receive a text message on their phones are required to visit their local NIDA office to collect their identity cards.

"The failure to comply will result in the suspension of their National Identification Number (NIN) usage one month after receiving the message," the letter stated.
