TRC gears up for SGR launch with new locomotives and passenger cars
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) dream is inching closer to reality, with the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) taking delivery of three electric locomotives and 27 shiny new passenger cars.
The latest batch brings the total locomotives received to four and passenger cars to 56, paving the way for a smooth rollout of the modern railway service.
"We're steadily equipping ourselves for SGR operations," affirmed TRC Acting Director-General Michibia Shiwa during a press briefing on Saturday.
He revealed the corporation's ambitious plans, boasting 17 locomotives and 59 passenger cars already purchased for the project.
But the excitement doesn't stop there. Passengers can look forward to even more comfort and speed, with Shiwa announcing the arrival of three additional passenger cars in February 2024.
The locomotives, boasting a hefty 160 km/h speed, promise to whisk travelers across the country in record time.
And that's not all! The first set of 10 sleek, modern trains – complete with those signature pointed heads – is scheduled to arrive in March 2024.
Get ready for eight more deliveries between May and October, bringing two sets of these beauties every month.
Passengers can choose between two classes: Economy, offering cozy comfort for 45 passengers per car, and business, where 78 travelers can enjoy international-standard luxury.
Shiwa emphasised the rigorous testing procedures underway to ensure perfect compatibility between the trains and the newly built infrastructure, guaranteeing a safe and seamless journey.
Selemani Mrisho, Dar es Salaam Port Director, echoed the excitement, expressing pride in facilitating the smooth arrival of these marvels of modernity.
"We've been working tirelessly since the ship docked yesterday, and we've already offloaded 16 cars," he declared, showcasing the dedication behind bringing SGR to life.
The arrival of these locomotives and passenger cars marks a significant milestone in Tanzania's journey towards a faster, more efficient, and more comfortable railway experience.
