Jubilee Health Insurance, Axieva and Airtel Money Tanzania seek to tap into millions of uninsured but digitally connected Tanzanians in a move that could revolutionize health insurance in the country

Dar es Salaam. Jubilee Health Insurance, Axieva and Airtel Money Tanzania have forged a strategic partnership aimed at providing comprehensive and affordable health insurance coverage, specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of individuals and families across the country.

The trio announced yesterday that their strategic partnership will revolutionise the health insurance landscape by delivering affordable, market-relevant, and easily accessible services right at the fingertips of Airtel Money customers.

This comes in light of available data indicating that only around 15 percent of the Tanzanian population of slightly over 65 million is currently fully covered by the Health Insurance Schemes (HIS).

The predominant portion of the 15 percent comprises individuals enrolled in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and the Community Health Fund (CHF), constituting eight and six percent, respectively.

Others have registered with health insurance schemes under the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), accounting for three percent, while one percent is covered by private health insurance companies.

As such, the Jubilee Health Insurance, Axieva and Airtel Money Tanzania partnership aims at supporting the 75 percent of Tanzanians who own a mobile phone by providing them with a well-crafted mobile healthcare product known as Afya Poa, Afya Supa and Afya Dhahabu.

Under the arrangement, Afya Poa is a hospital cash cover that will reimburse customers pre-determined amounts of between Sh20,000 and Sh50,000 per night spent in the hospital, starting from the second night, at monthly premiums of between Sh300 and Sh3,000.

On the other hand, Afya Supa will provide customers with a cashless inpatient limit of Sh5 million and a maternity limit of Sh2 million per year and one can include a spouse and up to five children.

The premiums for Afya Supa will range between Sh15,000 and Sh45,000 per month. The third benefit, Afya Dhahabu, will also offer a cashless inpatient benefit of Sh8 million, an outpatient benefit of Sh600,000 and a maternity benefit of Sh2 million per year for monthly premiums as low as Sh30,000 per month.

The insurance solutions have been designed to be inclusive, serving people of all generations, with a minimum entry age of 18 years and a maximum joining age of 65 years at entry.

Jubilee Health’s chief executive officer, Dr Harold Adamson, said the partnership will revolutionise the insurance sector in Tanzania. “We believe this health insurance product has come at the right time and is aimed at supporting government initiatives on making health insurance accessible to all Tanzanians and therefore becoming a game changer within the health sector,” he said.

According to Axieva Africa Lab managing director, Gaurav Dhingra, the partnership was a clear example of how the entire value chain of a complex industry can be digitally transformed to provide health insurance to millions of our customers.

Airtel Tanzania Corporate Communications Director, Ms, Beatrice Singano, said the deal was a significant step in the direction of Tanzania going digital.
