Dar es Salaam. As Tanzania commemorates World Water Day, WaterAid Tanzania (WAT) and Amref Health Africa Tanzania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving access to clean and safe water for communities in need.

The partnership highlights the essential role water plays in public health and sustainable development, reinforcing efforts to combat water scarcity while enhancing sanitation and hygiene across the country.

On Friday, March 21, 2025, WaterAid Tanzania Country Director Ms Anna Mzinga emphasized that sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services are vital for disease prevention, poverty alleviation, women's empowerment, quality education, and healthcare improvements.

"The MoU for 2025-2030 will provide rural communities with access to safer water through well-coordinated projects, fostering development throughout Tanzania," she stated.

Ms Mzinga also mentioned that the collaboration will focus on developing innovative and scalable WASH solutions, mobilizing resources, and advocating for stronger policies to prioritise WASH in the health sector.

Both organisations plan to implement joint initiatives for capacity building and knowledge sharing to ensure sustainable improvements in schools, healthcare facilities, and marketplaces.

"This collaboration builds on our strategic approach of working with others as a convener and catalyst for change," she added.

Dr Florence Temu, Country Director for Amref Health Africa Tanzania, described the MoU as a significant step towards making access to WASH a right rather than a privilege.

"This partnership reinforces our commitment to transforming schools, healthcare facilities, homes, marketplaces, and other environments into healthier, more resilient spaces," she said.

Dr Temu stressed that safe water is not only essential for survival but also for dignity, empowerment, and breaking the cycle of poverty.

"Together, we are strengthening the foundation for disease prevention, quality education, and a healthier Tanzania," she noted.

Key aspects of the partnership include joint initiatives to improve and sustain WASH services, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, and supporting national targets through the Water Sector Development Programme (WSDP).

The collaboration will also focus on capacity building, knowledge sharing, and innovative WASH solutions to enhance service delivery, ensuring sustainable improvements that communities and government authorities can maintain.
