White Sands fire contained

What you need to know:

  • Guests have been taken to the nearby Seascape hotel.

Dar es Salaam. Thefire that engulfed the White Sands hotel this evening, Thursday 31, 2018 has finally been contained, but not before it destroyed part of the seaside hotel. According to The Citizen observation about a quarter of the hotel, including the restaurant, has been completely destroyed.

Guests have been taken to the nearby Seascape hotel.

The hotel management and the Police were not available for comment but eyewitnesses said the fire broke out at 4pm at the restaurant before spreading.

Fire and Rescue Assistant Supervisor for Ilala Region, Mtarazaki Saburi, said when the fire engines arrived the inferno had already spread to the rest of the hotel.

Hotel staffers Joseph Paul and Goodluck Ayo said the quick spreading of the fire was due to the sea breeze. The two hotel staffers said no casualty has so far been reported.

“We suspect an electrical fault is the cause of the fire. But further investigations, to start tomorrow Saturday September 1, will shed more light,” Mr Saburi said.

Three fire engines and three clean water trucks were at the scene and successfully contained the inferno as at about 8pm.

“I do not know what I will do if I lose this job. I have a family to take care of,” Ayo said.
