Dar es Salaam. Environmental and social experts from the World Bank (WB) and the Tanzania Social Action Fund (Tasaf) have commended the strides made in uplifting impoverished households in the Manyara and Dodoma regions of Tanzania.

Their satisfaction was voiced during a recent visit to assess the implementation of poverty alleviation programmes spearheaded by Tasaf.

The visit aimed to measure the effectiveness of ongoing initiatives, celebrate achievements, and strategise solutions to emerging challenges.

It also sought to identify areas for improvement to ensure that these programmes tangibly benefit their intended recipients and contribute to the nation's overall development.

During their field visit, the experts were impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm exhibited by Tasaf beneficiaries in engaging in various income-generating activities within their communities.

An Environmental Specialist at WB, Ms Edina Kashangaki, expressed satisfaction with the implementation of Tasaf projects, especially noting that the beneficiaries are engaged in development activities.

"We encountered an elderly individual who, inspired by a public reservoir construction project, utilized his newfound skills to construct a small irrigation dam on his farm,” she said.

She further recounted that the elderly individual’s sugarcane cultivation thrives, and he anticipates significant earnings upon harvest, a testament to the transformative impact of these initiatives.

A Social Development Officer at Tasaf, Nelusigwe Mwakigonja, , shed light on the program's phased approach, emphasizing its commitment to empowering households with the tools and resources needed to break the cycle of poverty.

"We are currently in the second phase of our poverty alleviation programme, which aims to empower targeted households to seize economic opportunities and access essential services. Through our efforts, we aspire to see tangible improvements in the livelihoods of the households we serve, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction at the community level," remarked Nelusigwe.

As the visit concluded, both WB and Tasaf expressed optimism about the future trajectory of poverty alleviation efforts in Tanzania.

With continued collaboration and community engagement, these initiatives hold the promise of fostering sustainable development and improving the lives of marginalized populations in Manyara, Dodoma, and beyond.
