Morogoro. The CCM presidential candidate, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has used the first day of her campaign trail in Morogoro to outline an ambitious package of infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and industrial projects aimed at positioning the region as one of Tanzania’s fastest-growing economic zones.

Speaking before a crowd of supporters on Friday, August 29, 2025, Hassan, who seeks re-election into the presidency, framed her pledges as part of a broader agenda to integrate Morogoro into national and regional markets, leveraging the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and new investments in health, education, and energy.

“The plan is to revive Morogoro as an industrial hub,” she said, recognising that agriculture is Morogoro’s economic backbone.

Ms Hassan pledged to build a modern farmers’ market and construct five warehouses in Kilosa along the SGR corridor.

These storage and logistics facilities are expected to ease post-harvest losses and ensure smooth transportation of crops to domestic and export markets.

“The government will also continue offering fertiliser subsidies and improved seeds to boost yields and strengthen food security,” she said.

President Hassan emphasised universal access to electricity, promising that every sub-village in Morogoro will be connected to power.

In addition, new electricity substations will be constructed to stabilise supply, a move that could attract more industries.

On transport, she vowed to accelerate road construction and upgrades to complement the SGR, and linked social sector spending to long-term growth.

She announced the construction of 28 health centres and 67 dispensaries, as well as new secondary school classrooms and a school for children with special needs.

As tourism demand rises, partly facilitated by the SGR, Ms Hassan unveiled plans to build a Morogoro Convention Centre.

The facility, she argued, will attract conferences, cultural events, and investors, complementing the region’s tourism potential in areas such as Mikumi and Uluguru.
