All eyes on Eaton as golf tees off

Dar es Salaam. Newly crowned Uganda Ladies Open champion Angel Eaton will be the major attraction in Weekly Fiddle golf tournament.
Eaton is among 60 golfers expected to battle it out for top honours in the championship set for today at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC). Organised by Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, the one day event will feature top golfers from Morogoro Gymkhana Club, Lugalo golf club and DGC.
Last weekend, Eaton did Tanzanians proud when a bogey-par-birdie finish gave the 23 year-old golfer her second successive Uganda Ladies Golf Open title in Entebbe.
Eaton’s eight-stroke victory margin also sealed her fourth major championship of the season after wins at the Kenya Coast Open in Mombasa, Zimbabwe Amateur Strokeplay Championship in Harare and Morogoro Open.
DGC captain Akhil Yusufali told this paper yesterday that preparations for the eagerly awaited championship were in place.
“Golf fans should expect a tough but exciting championship because it has attracted a host of top golfers from Dar es Salaam and Morogoro,” said Yusufali.
“Participating golfers will compete in the men’s and women’s categories. They are all in high spirits, each looking forward to making a mark in the tournament,” he added.
He named Hawa Wanyenche and Fatma Makame as among golfers poised to give Eaton a run for her money as the Uganda Ladies Open champion seeks to add another title to her reputation.

Also in the list are Joseph Tango, Dionis Malinzi, Mohabe Nyirabu, Kishen Dhebar, Salvatory Rwabizi ,Selemani Tambwe and Anil Chopra.
Last week, Victor Joseph emerged overall winner of the Weekly Fiddle tournament, while Mohabe Nyirabu finished second in the men’s category after carding 38 points.
In the ladies category, it was again a two horse race. After winning the last weekend’s event, Fatma Makame, handicap-23, emerged winner with 32 points.
Fatma said yesterday that she was in great shape, looking forward to retaining the title again.
