Dar es Salaam. Azam FC have announced an ambitious plan to stage their version of the African Youth Championship in December.
The idea was made public barely a day after Azam FC Academy clinched the Azam Youth Cup trophy. The tournament, which they bankrolled, involved teams from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
It featured hosts Azam FC Academy, Future Stars Academy (Arusha), Ligi Ndogo Academy (Kenya) and Football for Good (Uganda). The hosts laid their hands on the trophy after stopping Kenyan representatives 3-0 in the final game played at the Azam Sports Complex on Sunday to end the tournament unbeaten.
Shaaban Idd scored a brace in the 15th and 90th minutes to lead Azam to the win with Yahaya Zaidi scoring the other three minutes to the half hour mark.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Azam FC chief executive officer Azam FC Saad Kawemba, disclosed that they have shifted gears and will now host a tournament, which will bring together at least 16 teams from the continent.
According to Kawemba, preparations for the inaugural tournament have started, adding that the championship would change the football landscape of Tanzania.
“We have earmarked 16 teams for the African championship that will take place here in December. It is an idea that is aimed at grooming our talented players,” said Kawemba
“It’s our belief that the tournament will help give our up-and-coming players the required international experience. We are simply going to change the football landscape of this country.”
