Dar es Salaam. A host of prominent golfers are expected in this year’s edition of the Lugalo Open, which is planned to tee off on Saturday at the club’s course.

However, the tournament promises a rare treat for golf enthusiasts after Mufindi and Misenyi clubs confirmed their participation in the two-day competition.

Nine clubs will now field their golfers at the tournament.

Apart from Mufindi and Misenyi, others are Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC), Moshi Club, TPC Club and Morogoro.

The 36-hole tournament, organised by Lugalo Golf Club, is sanctioned by the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) and bankrolled with Tanzania Housing Corporation (NHC).

Stiff competition is anticipated at the TGU’s second tournament of the year as noted by Victor Joseph, who is the current top golfer on the order of merit.

Joseph, who took an early lead at the Moshi Open in January, told The Citizen yesterday that he will strive to gain more points from the weekend event.

“I have been training for a long time now and I am satisfied with my progress in training. It’s my hope that I will gain as my points as possible again,” he said.

“However, anything can happen at the tournament because we have competitors from nine clubs and everyone has been preparing for quite a long time, so it is going to be tough,”

Peter Fiwa of the DGC was also in confident mood, saying that he has trained well to win one of the top positions at the tournament.

“I have had perfect preparations for the forthcoming tournament and I am really looking forward to taking one of the top spots,” said Fiwa, one of the golfers expected to offer a stern test to the pre-tournament favourites.

“I am aware that the event will be very competitive this time around, but I believe I will be among the winners,” he added.

Lugalo captain Japhet Masai disclosed that preparations were in place and they were keen on welcoming the golfers from nine clubs.

Some of the golfers expected at the tournament are Angel Eaton, Vick Elias, Joseph Tango, Noel Mheni, Nicholas Chitanda, Hassan Dendego, Sara Dennis, Josephat Masai, Victor Joseph and Hawa Wanyeche.
