Government promises Taifa Stars Sh500 million if they qualify for Afcon 2023

Dar es Salaam. The government has pledged to prize money of Sh500 million if Tanzania national football team will qualify into the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Ivory Coast next year.
The pledge was announced by the Minister of Culture, Arts and Sports, Pindi Chana in the press conference held yesterday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Chana said that the amount aim to inspire the players to fight hard in the remaining matches whereby on Friday, Taifa Stars will meet Uganda’s counterpart, The Cranes in Ismailia, Egypt.
She said that the match is very important for Taifa Stars who are placed third in group F with one point from two matches. Algeria are at the top with six points and are followed by Niger with two points. Uganda are at the bottom with one point.
According to the schedule, Taifa Stars face Uganda again on March 28 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and later play Niger at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on June 12 before traveling to Algiers to face Algeria on September 4.
According to Chana, the Deputy Minister Hamis Mwinjuma will lead local Tanzanians and those living in Egypt to support the team in Ismailia.
“I am asking Tanzania football fans to give moral support Taifa Stars players during the Ismailia’s duel and turn at large in the March 28’s match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. It is very important matches for Stars in order to revive hope of qualifying in Ivory Coast’s final,” said Chana.
