Dar es Salaam. Two Tanzania prominent golfers, Madina Idd and Aalaa Somji, are set to compete in this year’s Uganda Ladies Open Tournament, which is scheduled to tee off on Thursday at the Uganda Golf Club course.

Speaking with The Citizen, Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) Competition Secretary General Rehema Athuman mentioned that the golfers are in the final stages of their preparations for the event.

She also noted that the opportunity is still available for other Tanzanian golfers to compete and encouraged more female golfers to join.

“We urge as many lady golfers as possible to compete.

So far, only two have confirmed, but we will announce others as they confirm.

“This is one of the biggest events in East Africa, where golfers can earn points that contribute to their World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR),” said Rehema.

Madina expressed her confidence and readiness for the tournament.

“I have trained intensively for this event.

I know that all the top golfers from East Africa and neighbouring countries will be there.

My goal is to win,” said Madina.
Last year, Madina (pictured right)  finished second behind Uganda’s Peace Kabasweka, who scored 68, 75, and 78, for a total gross of 221. Madina scored 73, 74, and 75, finishing with a gross of 222.

Ugandan golfer Evah Magala was placed third with a gross of 228, scoring 74, 78, and 76.

The Uganda Ladies Open has a history of international winners, including Tanzanian Olomi in 2018 and Angel Eaton, who won in 2012, 2013, and 2017 before turning professional.

Other past winners include Zambia’s Melissa Nawa in 2008 and Kenya’s Mary Karano in 2007.

The competition is expected to be tough, with top golfers from across the region vying for the prestigious title.
