Revealed: Gamondi extends contract with Yanga for one year

Dar es Salaam. Yanga fans can now relax after receiving the good news that their coach, Miguel Gamondi, has extended his contract for another year.

Gamondi, an Argentine national, was completing his contract at the end of this month and had already received various offers from across Africa.

One of the offers came from South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs, who reportedly had him on their shortlist.

Reliable sources from Yanga have confirmed that the club's management have agreed to extend Gamondi's contract for another year, taking into account his impressive performance.

“Gamondi has agreed to continue coaching Yanga for another year. Therefore, the issue of him leaving Yanga is now settled, and members and fans of Yanga should not worry about their coach; we will have him for the next season,” our source said.

Gamondi, who succeeded Tunisian coach Nesreddine Nabi in the 2022/2024 season, has led Yanga to win two titles this year: the Tanzania Mainland Premier League and the CRDB Federation Cup.

He also enabled Yanga to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League after more than 20 years, as well as the quarter-finals.

Currently, Yanga’s members and fans hold him in high regard, especially after successfully defeating their traditional rivals, Simba SC, in both legs of this year’s league season.

 Under Gamondi, Yanga defeated Simba 5-1 in the first leg of the NBC Premier League and again beat their bitter rivals 2-1 in the second leg.


 Background

Miguel Gamondi was born in December 1963 in Olavarría, Argentina, and played football for the local side Club Ferrocarril Sud.

After retiring from playing, Gamondi managed several clubs in Argentina, including Ferro Carril Sud, Racing, El Fortín, San Martín de Tucumán, and Racing Club de Avellaneda.

In 2000, he moved to Africa to join Oscar Fullone as an assistant coach at the Libyan side Al-Ahly.

He also served as an assistant coach to Fullone with the Burkina Faso national football team in December 2001 and later became an assistant coach at ASEC Mimosas, Wydad Casablanca, Espérance Sportive de Tunis, and Étoile du Sahel.

He was appointed assistant manager to Ángel Cappa at South African side Mamelodi Sundowns in 2005.

In December 2007, he became the manager of Platinum Stars, leading the team to the final 16 of the 2008 CAF Confederation Cup, their first venture into continental competition.

Subsequently, he managed CR Belouizdad and USM Alger in Algeria, Ittihad Kalba and Al Urooba in the United Arab Emirates, and Hassania Agadir, Wydad AC, and Ittihad Tanger in Morocco.
