Tanzanian runners shine in 2023 CRDB Bank Marathon

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s athletes Jacklini Juma, Magdalena Crispin, Josephat Joshua, Nestory Stephen, and Failuna Matanga have made Tanzanians proud after shining in the CRDB Marathon competition held yesterday at The Green, Oysterbay.

As Juma won the gold medal in the full marathon in the women's category, Magdalena won the gold medal in the women's half marathon, while Joshua won the gold medal on the men's side and won the bronze medal in the women’s half marathon.

The race saw Moses Mengich of Kenya win the gold medal in the full marathon after clocking 02:08:48. He was followed by Ugandan’ Jonathan Akankwasa, who clocked 02:11:39, and Tanzanian Nestory Stephen, who won bronze after recording 02:13:08 in the thrilling event.

In the women’s side full marathon, Juma clocked 02:32:34 to finish at the top, while Paskalia Chipkorir, with 02:32:36 in the second, and Nancy Cheptegei of Uganda, who clocked 02:38:42, won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In the women's half marathon race, Crispin clocked 01:06:26 to take home the gold medal. Sudanese Atalena Gaspar won the silver medal after recording 01:06:54, and Matanga emerged in the third to win the bronze medal after clocking 01:07:33.

Kenyan runner Gladys Rotich placed fourth with 01:08:55, and fifth place was won by Tanzanian runner Sara Ramadhan with 01:10:28.

In the men's half marathon category, Joshua overshadowed other runners after winning the gold medal in the tough event. Joshua clocked 01:00:02 and was followed by Mnangat Willy from Kenya, who clocked 01:00:03, and Panuel Mkungo of Kenya, who recorded 01:00:12 to win the bronze medal.

A total of 7,000 runners participated in the race, which raised a total of Sh1 billion, which will be used to solve various healthy challenges. Unlike previous years, this year's competition had great excitement from various local and national participants.

The first winners of the 42-kilometre race were awarded Sh10 million each, apart from gold medals. The second- and third-place winners were awarded Sh5 million and Sh2 million, respectively.

In the half marathon, the first winners were awarded Sh5 million, the second winners Sh2 million, and the third Sh1 million, respectively.

In the 10 kilometre race, Cecilia Panga, Transfora Musa, and Neema Kisuda placed in the first, second, and third positions, respectively. Shuemery Mohamed, Josephat Tiophil, and Jonas John won the top three positions consecutively.

Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi commended the bank for staging the event, which is used to raise funds for special purposes apart from promoting sports. President Mwinyi, various ministers, the government, and private institutions, including CRDB Bank managing director Abdulmajid Nsekela, were among the officials featured in the five-kilometer race.
