Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s celebrated lady golfer, Madina Idd, today begins her search for silverware at the prestigious Muthaiga Open Tournament, held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The 54-hole competition is one of the top golfing events in the region, attracting a field of over 156 golfers from across East Africa and beyond.
Countries like Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Burundi, South Africa, as well as international participants from Spain, India, and Great Britain, will be represented in this highly competitive tournament.
Unlike many other competitions that feature separate categories for male and female golfers, the Muthaiga Open brings together both genders in one field, offering a level playing field for all competitors.
The mixed-format approach adds an exciting dynamic to the event, showcasing the talents of both male and female golfers from around the world.
Speaking exclusively to The Citizen yesterday, Madina revealed that the first day, today, will see all participants compete in an 18-hole stroke play format. On the second day, tomorrow, golfers will have another 18-hole round, bringing the total to 36 holes.
The final day of the event, on Sunday, will see the top 30 golfers, based on their performance, advancing to the finals, with the top 20 receiving prizes and recognition.
“I feel proud to be one of the golfers in this competition and the only Tanzanian here. I expect strong competition, as I will be going up against both male and elite female golfers from different countries,” said Madina through telephone.
Madina expressed her confidence in the training she has undertaken, having adapted well to the challenges posed by the Muthaiga Golf Course.
She has previously secured multiple titles on this course, which gives her an edge in preparation for the event.
“I’ve trained hard for this, and I’m familiar with the course, which has been kind to me in the past. I am determined to perform well and make my country proud,” she added.
She also extended a heartfelt appeal to fellow Tanzanians for their moral support as she embarks on this challenging tournament.
“I call on all Tanzanians to cheer me on as I head into this battle,” she said.
