Athletics Tanzania happy with IGP over support

Arusha. Athletics Tanzania says it is happy with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over the recent promotion of an upcoming national runner who is the member of the police force.
Fabian Nelson, a winner of 5,000 metres in the recently held East African Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) regional athletic competition, has been promoted to a Corporal from a constable.
His promotion was approved by the IGP Simon Sirro in appreciation of his sterling performance in the tourney held in Dar es Salaam.
"His promotion is a motivation to our young athletes. This will make him to perform even better", said Wilhelm Gidabuday, AT secretary general.
He added that it through personal intervention of the IGP himself that saw Nelson promoted, adding that the young runner will continue to feature in the Tanzanian contigent in the international athletic races.
He said AT would continue to work closely with the police force in tapping and nurturing the young talents who would bring honours to the country.
Speaking during a brief function to congratulate atheles who excelled during the recent athletics and taekwondo competitions, the staff officer with the regional police headquarters here Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Yusuph Ilembo said the police force was committed to the promotion of sports.
However, he stated that full support to sports would be assured only if the sportsmen and women within the force performed well in the local, national,  regional and international competitions.
During the recent regional athletics race Nelson clocked 13:45:99 in 5,000 km race, breaking the record made during last year's World Cross Country athletics competition in Kampala, Uganda.
Stephen Diott from the Uganda police force clocked 14:02:11 during the World Cross country race.
In the recent EAPCCO competition, Tanzania emerged second as the overall winner among the East African countries, trailing Kenya.
