Azam FC end Yanga's winning streak in Mainland league

What you need to know:

  • This result ended Yanga’s impressive unbeaten run, leaving them at the top of the league despite the setback.

Dar es Salaam. Azam FC handed Yanga their first defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory at the Azam Complex on November 2, 2024, in an intense Tanzania Mainland Premier League clash.

This result ended Yanga’s impressive unbeaten run, leaving them at the top of the league despite the setback.

The game’s lone goal came in the 33rd minute, courtesy of Gibrill Sillah, who capitalized on a well-timed pass from Adolf Mtazigwa to find the back of the net.

Sillah’s finish underscored Azam’s tenacity, and the team’s resilience were evident from the early stages of the match.

The goal came shortly after a pivotal moment in the game when Yanga’s defender, Ibrahim Bacca, received a straight red card from referee Ahmed Arajiga in the 23rd minute.

Bacca was dismissed for fouling Nassoro Saadun, who was poised to score.

The red card put Yanga at a disadvantage, making it difficult for them to regroup and sustain their previous dominance.

Before the match, Yanga had an enviable record, having won all eight of their previous games without conceding a single goal, thanks to their goalkeeper Djigui Diarra's consistent clean sheets.

However, Azam’s persistence proved too much for Yanga, who, despite their strong form, could not overcome the numerical disadvantage.

Despite the defeat, Yanga remains at the top of the league table with 24 points from nine matches. Simba SC follows closely with 22 points, having a superior goal difference (+14) compared to Singida Black Stars, who also have 22 points but hold a +9 goal difference.

Azam’s win elevated them to fourth place with 21 points from 10 matches, adding crucial points to their tally as they aim to strengthen their standing.

This season's defeat marks the second time Azam FC have overcome Yanga, following their victory in the previous season where they triumphed 2-1.

Last season, Ihefu FC also beat Yanga 1-0, breaking their streak late in the competition.

The match showcased high tension and competitive spirit from both sides, with each team creating scoring opportunities throughout.

Azam’s victory reaffirm their strength in the league and set the stage for more closely contested matches as the season progresses.
