CAF fines Yanga Sh82 million for various offences

Young Africans train on Monday

Tanzania’s representatives to CAF Confederation Cup, Young Africans (Yanga), have been fined by the confederation a total of $35,000, which is more than Sh82 million, for various offences allegedly committed in their quarter-final match against Nigeria’s Rivers United on April 30, 2023.

The Nigerians filed complaints a day before the match that their bus was assaulted, the windows were broken, and the amount of $5000 was stolen, while they also claimed to have been drugged.

The Ethics Committee of the African Football Confederation (CAF), which met on May 4, has also fined Yanga $10,000 for the inappropriate behaviour of their fans, who are allegedly involved in lighting torches and setting off fireworks on the field.

Another fine of $25,000 was for allegedly spraying drugs on the team bus used by Rivers United when they were training. CAF has directed Yanga to pay the money within 60 days from the issuance of the penalty.

However, CAF says Yanga can appeal the decision within three days of the issuance of the punishment. If Yanga fails to appeal within the indicated period, the team will be required to pay the fine as instructed.
