Dar es Salaam. Foreign junior swimmers have been invited to compete in the Tanzania Junior Swimming Championships, which will be held on June 22 and 23 in the city.
This was revealed by Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) Secretary General Inviolata Itatiro in an interview with The Citizen.
Inviolata said they have decided to give foreign swimmers a chance to feature in the event to make it more competitive and challenging.
She stated that the event is open to all current 2023/2024 Tanzania registered swimmers and all foreign swimmers who have achieved qualifying time standards and have been cleared by their federations.
All the foreign swimmers are required to submit clearance letters from their national federations and have proper travel credentials.
According to Inviolata, swimmers competing in the event must have achieved qualifying times between June 1, 2023, and May 2024. She mentioned that the event preparations are ongoing well and called on all swimmers to train intensively.
She said the swimmers will compete in various age categories including under seven, eight/nine, 10/11, and 12 years. She added that the competition will bring together swimmers from various parts of Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
“We have organized a junior event to promote the sport and provide international experience to budding swimmers. Last year’s event held in July saw more than 150 enthusiastic young swimmers who were a force to reckon with. I call upon private and government institutions to support the event to make it more successful,” said Inviolata.
A total of 82 disciplines will be contested by junior swimmers in the event, which is expected to be thrilling.
Swimmers who win gold medals in individual events will be awarded six points, while silver and bronze medalists will receive three and one point respectively.
There will be no points for relay events or for swimmers whose qualifying times are below the standard.
