Dar es Salaam. Tanzania swimmers are optimistic about doing their best in the next year’s Dubai Open Swimming Championships scheduled to take place from February 14 to 16 at the Hamdan Sports Complex.
Tanzania, through High Performance Training (HPT), will field six swimmers ahead of the event that will also see world class siwmmers competing.
Speaking to The Citizen Tuesday January 7, 2025, HPT manager Francisca Binamungu announced the team members: Crissa Dillip, Heydleen Magashi, Sebastian Carpintero, Kaysan Kachra, Konhelli Mhella, and Austin Okore.
She said the swimmers are currently undergoing intensive training in preparation for the championships, which will feature elite swimmers from around the globe.
“This is the second time Tanzania, through HPT swimmers, will compete in the renowned Dubai Open Swimming Championships. In the previous event, Crissa Dillip won a bronze medal. Next year, we aim to win more medals, which is why our swimmers are training rigorously under coaches Alex Mwaipasi and Michael Livingstone,” said Binamungu, who is also known as Mama Crissa.
She explained that the event, originally known as the Middle East Open & Junior Championships, is a premier aquatic competition created and hosted by Hamilton Aquatics.
Since its inception in 2011, the championship has grown into the most prominent swimming competition in the Middle East.
The competition offers prizes for top-performing male and female swimmers in the Open Championship category.
The swimmer with the highest accumulated World Aquatics points score across the event will receive approximately $2,000 (Sh5 million).
Additionally, the title of “King or Queen of Sprints,” awarded to the swimmer with the highest accumulated points across all 50-metre events, comes with a $1,000 (Sh2.5 million) prize.
