It’s now Yanga vs Simba in Premier League title battle

What you need to know:

  •  With just a handful of matches remaining, both teams are neck and neck in the standings, making the title race more intense than ever.

Dar es Salaam. The race for the Mainland Tanzania Premier League title has now narrowed down to a two-horse battle between defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) and their arch-rivals Simba.

With just a handful of matches remaining, both teams are neck and neck in the standings, making the title race more intense than ever.

Yanga currently lead the table with 58 points from 22 matches, having won 19 games, drawn one, and lost only two.

The Jangwani-based giants have displayed a dominant performance this season, scoring 58 goals while conceding only 9, boasting a goal difference of 49, the best in the league. Simba, on the other hand, are just one point behind their rivals, sitting in second place with 57 points from 22 matches.

The Msimbazi-based club have won 18 games, drawn three, and lost only once, scoring 52 goals and conceding 8, with a goal difference of 44.

With such a small margin between the two, every game matters, and neither side can afford to slip up. The possibility of the title being decided on the final day of the season is becoming more realistic, adding excitement to the league

The battle for the top four heats up

While the title race is a battle between two teams, the fight for a top-four finish is also becoming fierce. Azam FC, who currently sit third, have 48 points from 23 matches, while Singida Black Stars follow closely behind in fourth place with 44 points from 23 matches.

Both Azam and Singida Black Stars are aiming to secure a place in next season’s CAF club competitions, but their inconsistency in results has kept the door open for other teams to challenge.

With ten matches remaining in the season, any slip-up could cost them dearly, especially with teams like Tabora United (37 points) and JKT Tanzania (34 points) looking to climb up the table.

Relegation battle

At the bottom of the table, the battle for survival is equally intense. KenGold FC (16 points), Tanzania Prisons (18 points), Kagera Sugar (19 points), and Pamba Jiji FC (22 points) are all fighting to avoid relegation.

KenGold FC, a team from the Southern Highlands, is currently at the bottom, struggling with defensive issues, having conceded 40 goals—the highest in the league. Meanwhile, Tanzania Prisons, another Southern Highlands side, is also in deep trouble, with only 18 points from 23 matches. From the Lake Zone, both Kagera Sugar (19 points) and Pamba Jiji FC (22 points) are also in the danger zone.

The teams in the relegation zone must step up their performances in the remaining matches or risk dropping to the lower division next season. With the title race, top-four battle, and relegation fight all heating up, the remaining fixtures promise to deliver high-stakes action for football fans across Tanzania.
