What you need to know:
- Kagera Sugar, a club with a rich history in Tanzanian football, have been part of the top division since 2005.
Dar es Salaam. Ken Gold FC have officially been relegated from the Tanzania Mainland Premier League following a 2-1 defeat to Coastal Union at the Mkwakwani Stadium over the weekend.
With just three matches remaining in the season, the debutants sit at the bottom of the table with only 16 points from 27 matches and a goal difference of -28.
Even if they were to win all of their remaining fixtures, it would not be enough to avoid the drop, marking a disappointing end to their maiden season in the top flight.
Promoted from the Championship last season, KenGold’s time in the Premier League has been brief and challenging.
The team struggled to match the pace and physicality of the top-tier competition and managed only a handful of victories throughout the campaign.
Their remaining fixtures against Pamba Jiji FC, Simba SC, and Namungo FC will now serve only for pride and the chance to disrupt the plans of other clubs still battling to avoid relegation.
With KenGold officially out, the spotlight now shifts to Kagera Sugar FC, who are second from bottom in 15th place with 22 points from 27 matches.
Kagera Sugar, a club with a rich history in Tanzanian football, have been part of the top division since 2005.
Despite their longevity and past competitiveness, the Bukoba-based side is now in serious danger of following KenGold into relegation.
Their remaining matches are against Mashujaa FC, Namungo FC, and a high-stakes clash against Simba SC.
For Kagera to survive, they will likely need to win all three of these matches, a tall order given their current form.
The fight to avoid 15th place, which lead to a relegation playoff, has become increasingly tense.
Several teams are hovering just above the danger zone and will need to be cautious in their final fixtures.
Coastal Union FC and Namungo FC both have 31 points, with Mashujaa FC and KMC FC close behind on 30 points each.
Fountain Gate follow with 29 points, while Pamba Jiji FC and Tanzania Prisons FC each have 27 points.
With such a narrow gap separating the teams from 8th to 14th place, the final stretch of the season is set to deliver thrilling encounters and unexpected turns.
One poor result could spell disaster, while a single win could significantly improve a team’s chances of survival.
While the relegation battle rages at the bottom of the table, the title race is equally captivating at the top.
Yanga SC remain in pole position with 70 points from 26 matches and an impressive goal difference of +58.
However, they face stiff competition from arch-rivals Simba SC, who have 57 points from just 22 matches.
With four games in hand, Simba have a real opportunity to close the gap and potentially overtake Yanga depending on how the leaders perform in the remaining fixtures.
Azam FC, currently third with 54 points from 27 matches, remain mathematically in the hunt, although their chances are slim.
For Azam to leapfrog Simba, they must win all their remaining matches and hope Simba falters in at least five of their eight remaining fixtures, a scenario that seems unlikely given Simba’s current momentum.
