Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian top female golfer Madina Idd is determined to bounce back after narrowly missing out on the title in the recently concluded Kenya Ladies Golf Tournament.
Madina finished in second place with a total of 227 strokes in the 54-hole competition.
The Arusha Gymkhana Golf Club member led the leaderboard for the first two rounds but saw her hopes of claiming the title dashed when Kenyan golfer Joyce Wanjiru emerged victorious with a total of 226 strokes (+7).
Despite her disappointment, Madina is already looking ahead to the Sigona Ladies Open, scheduled for May 2 to 4, and is committed to preparing for her next challenge.
In an interview with The Citizen, Madina shared that she is currently resting but will resume training next week in preparation for the upcoming tournament.
“Despite finishing second, I’m a bit disappointed. I was in a position to win, but one mistake cost me the title,” she said.
“It was bad luck, but I’ve promised myself I will bounce back in the next Kenyan tournament. I want to showcase my skills and make all Tanzanians proud.”
The tournament proved to be a tough competition for Madina, who admitted that a costly mistake on the seventh hole affected her performance.
“It was a tough competition. I made a mistake on hole number seven, where I recorded seven strokes compared to Wanjiru’s five, and that impacted my overall score,” Madina explained.
In addition to Wanjiru and Madina, another Kenyan golfer, Margaret Njoki, finished in third place with a total of 235 strokes (+16).
Njoki’s consistent rounds of 79, 78, and 78 helped secure her spot on the podium.
Ashley Awuor, also from Kenya, placed fourth with a total of 239 strokes (+20), posting rounds of 80, 79, and 80.
Tanzania’s Vicky Elias rounded out the top five with a total of 253 strokes (+34), showing steady form throughout the tournament.
With the Sigona Ladies Open fast approaching, Madina is determined to leave the disappointment behind and focus on regaining her winning form.
“The tournament in Kenya was a learning experience. I know what I need to improve on, and I’m ready to come back stronger,” she said.
As she prepares for the Sigona Ladies Open, Madina aims to continue her strong performances in Kenya and bring pride to Tanzanian golf.
Madina’s resilience and determination to overcome setbacks reflect her commitment to becoming a dominant force in East African women’s golf.
