Manyika, son of former Dar es Salaam Young Africans and national team goalkeeper, Manyika Peter, made a stunning goal keeping on Saturday when the football giants clashed to a scoreless draw before thousands of supporters.
His goal-keeping came as a surprise after he was called upon to replace Simba’s first choice goalie, Ivo Mapunda and Hussein Shariff ‘Casillas,” who were sidelined due to injuries.
“ I had a lot of pressure to make my debut goal-keeping for Simba in a such a big match which draws attention from millions of Tanzanians.”
“ My father is my mentor,” said the 18 year-old boy. The draw brought relief to the teams’ coaches ( Brazilian Marcio Maximo-Yanga) and Zambian (Patrick Phiri-Simba).
For Manyika junior, who also played for JKT Ruvu’s U-20, Saturday’s duel was his first assignment since joining Simba Sports Club’s side B, ( he has now joined the senior team) after staying on the bench in the club’s previous three draws since the league kicked off.
His father now retired from active football, played for Yanga for over six seasons since 2004 after joining the club from Morogoro’s Mtibwa Sugar, with over seven national team appearances. Phiri was also pleased with Manyika’s performance, saying that his youngster goalie showed a superb game.
He said that the custodian was stable despite the fact that he was playing a big team and that was his first match in the premier league.Phiri said that he expects that his players will have a winning form in the subsequent league matches despite their continued draws.
Simba will play Prions while Yanga will play Kagera in their weekend’s league matches. Simba now have four points out of four games while Yanga have seven after playing the same number of games.
