Prominent golfers to compete in 2024 Waitara Trophy

Dar es Salaam. The 2024 Waitara Golf Trophy is set to tee off at the Lugalo Golf Course in Dar es Salaam on Saturday featuring more than 100 golfers.

The annual event’s objective is to honour retired General George Waitara’s contribution to the sports industry in Tanzania.

The retired General initiated the Lugalo Golf Club course. The golf course started operating in 2006, following Waitara’s immense contribution when he was Tanzania’s Chief of Defence Forces.

The Lugalo Golf Club captain Major Japhet Masai , told The Citizen that the 18 hole tournament will draw entries from different local clubs including Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, Morogoro Gymkhana Club, TPC Moshi, Moshi Gymkhana Club, Arusha Gymkhana Club, Kili Golf and Mfundi Club.

Masai said they are expecting a competitive event, calling upon all golfers to feature in the tournament. “We have received a good response from players, it encourages us and we hope everyone is going to have fun during the event.

There are still time for the golfers to confirm their participation in the competition. The door are open as our target is to have the competitive number of golfers," said Masai.

He said apart from senior, the event will also feature golfers of division A, B, C, Ladies and juniors in the event that NBC Bank are main sponsors while MeTL and Serena Hotel are co -sponsors.

According to Masai, various prominent golfers will compete in the event, including Isiaka Daudi, George Sembi, Vicky Elias, Hawa Wanyeche and many others. Vicky Elias said she will use the tournament to gauge her skills ahead of the prestigious Africa Amateur Championship.

The event has been scheduled to take place from February 21 to 24 at the Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa. The duo marks the first time Tanzanian lady golfers will feature in the competition, signalling a significant milestone for the sport in the country.

Vicky said that she is now in intensive training and believe the Saturday’s tournament will give her real picture ahead of the tournament.
