Simba secure vital away draw against Al Ahly Tripoli in CAF Confederation Cup match

What you need to know:

  • Despite being away from home and facing a hostile atmosphere in Tripoli, Simba's players showed immense determination throughout the 90 minutes.

Dar es Salaam. Simba SC displayed a commendable performance in their CAF Confederation Cup encounter against Al Ahly Tripoli, holding the Libyan side to a goalless draw today, September 15, 2024, at Tripoli International Stadium.

The result leaves Simba in a strong position ahead of the return leg, which will take place at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on September 22, 2024.

A victory in the second leg will see the Tanzanian giants advance to the group stage of the competition.

Despite being away from home and facing a hostile atmosphere in Tripoli, Simba's players showed immense determination throughout the 90 minutes.

The team's head coach, Fadlu Davids, made a series of tactical decisions that kept Al Ahly Tripoli at bay, much to the frustration of the home crowd.

The match, though ending in a draw, was filled with tense moments that saw fans vent their anger, throwing bottles towards the referees and Simba's players.

The key to Simba's success in the match was their defensive solidity. The backline, led by the experienced Shomari Kapombe and Mohamed "Tshabalala" Hussein, remained disciplined and composed, thwarting Al Ahly's attempts to break through. Abdulrazak Hamza and Che Malone Fondoh also contributed to a well-organized defensive unit that provided protection for goalkeeper Moussa Camara, who had an outstanding performance between the posts.

Simba’s midfield was equally effective, with Yusuf Kagoma and Deborah Fernandez Mavambo providing a solid defensive shield.

Meanwhile, Jean Charles Ahoua, Edwin Balua, and Joshua Mutale offered support in attack, attempting to push forward and create chances for the lone striker, Lionel Ateba.

Though Simba managed to stifle Al Ahly's attacks, they struggled to find the net themselves. Valentino Mashaka came closest to scoring in the second half, but his effort went wide, leaving Simba without an away goal.

The barren draw means Simba must win the return leg in Dar es Salaam to progress to the group stage of the competition.

A goalless draw in the second leg would result in a penalty shootout, while any score draw—such as 1-1 or 2-2—would see Al Ahly Tripoli advance on the away goals rule.

Fadlu Davids will be looking to sharpen his team's attacking play ahead of the decisive match at home. While the defense was solid, the lack of concentration in Simba's striking force was evident, with several chances going unconverted.

The coach will likely focus on improving his team’s finishing ability in training as they prepare for the second leg.

The Tanzanian side will be counting on their passionate home support at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, where they have a strong record in continental competitions.

Playing at home could provide the boost Simba need to break down Al Ahly Tripoli’s defense and secure the vital win required to move on in the tournament.

With just over a week to go before the return fixture, Simba’s preparations will be key. A disciplined performance in Tripoli has given them a strong platform, but the job is far from over.

The pressure will be on Simba to capitalize on their home advantage and finish the tie in style. Fans will expect the team to rise to the occasion and claim their place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
